Kyoto has several kintsugi workshops that look alike in a search list. This page lines up eight of them by operator, meeting place, length, group cap, rating count and starting price, so the choice stops being a coin toss.

Who is behind the Kyoto sessions

Search for kintsugi in Kyoto and the results blur together, because several listings share a name pattern and a price band. Behind them sit a few operators. With Japan runs the most-rated class and a kintsugi pottery class, both on the 4th floor of the same building, and also a kitchen knife workshop in that building.

Traveling Kyoto lists two annex sessions that meet on the 6th floor of the Zen Kyoto Annex, one of 1.5 hours and one of 1.25 hours. Japan Guide Star runs a 1-hour class in Saga, in the Arashiyama district, on the 2nd floor of a chopsticks studio. The GetYourGuide listings do not name their operators in the record we hold.

Why does the operator matter? Because it tells you what else you can book nearby and how the sessions relate. The two With Japan classes share a building, so if one date is sold out you can check the other without changing your plans. The annex sessions share a venue, so a day built around them is easy to plan. Treat the operator as a practical clue, not a quality score.

The Gion and Kawaramachi cluster

Most of the Kyoto kintsugi classes sit in or near the Gion and Kawaramachi area, the part of the old center where visitors already spend time. The most-rated class is described as being in a studio near Gion and Kawaramachi. A chopstick workshop run by Traveling Kyoto meets one minute on foot from the Yasaka Pagoda in Gion, which makes a second craft stop easy to add.

Getting there is a matter of public transport. The Kyoto City Tourism Association advises riding the JR Nara Line to Tofukuji Station and transferring to the Keihan Line for Kiyomizu or Gion.1 The one-day subway and bus ticket covers all subway and city bus lines, plus Kyoto Bus, Keihan Bus and West Japan JR Bus, excluding some routes, and is worth a look if you plan several stops.2

The Saga class is the outlier. It sits at the western edge of the city, which suits a day built around Arashiyama more than a Gion evening. The annex sessions meet on the 6th floor of a building whose name appears in the record as the Zen Kyoto Annex; confirm the meeting point in your booking email, because floor numbers matter in buildings with several tenants.

Rating counts

  • Gion, GYG, second450
  • Pottery, GYG354

Rating counts on each listing record; the GetYourGuide Gion pair and the Viator sessions are counted on their own platforms, so the totals are not additive.

What the rating counts reveal

Averages hide sample size, so read both. The most-rated class has 2,155 ratings at 4.93, the Zen annex class has 1,728 at 4.95, and the GetYourGuide Gion class has 1,112 at 4.83. All three are large samples. A gap of a tenth of a point between 4.93 and 4.95 is not a reason to choose either.

Smaller samples need more care. The central Kyoto session has 231 ratings at 4.97, the kintsugi pottery class 229 at 4.93, and the Saga class 32 at 4.97. The GetYourGuide workshop with an optional upgrade has 354 at 4.79, while its sister listing has 450 at 4.92. These are healthy numbers, but 32 ratings is still a thin base for any conclusion.

The star spread tells you more than the mean. For the most-rated class, 2,034 of 2,155 ratings are five-star, while the Zen annex class has 1,660 five-star ratings out of 1,728. Both lean heavily on the top score. We cannot read the review text for these listings, so the counts are what we can honestly report.

Time and group size, laid out

Length ranges from 1 hour to 1.5 hours across the standard classes, with the central Kyoto session at 1.25 hours. The kintsugi jewelry workshop is the long one at 2.5 hours and a different product altogether. If you want to fit a class between a morning temple and a late lunch, the 1-hour and 1.25-hour sessions give you slack.

Group caps vary more than lengths. The two With Japan classes cap at 10, the annex sessions at 16 and the Saga class at 20. The GetYourGuide pottery workshop is limited to 10 as well. The listings do not tell you how full each date is, so a cap is a ceiling, not a forecast. Book a weekday morning if you want a quieter table.

A caution about comparing like with like. A one-hour class and a 1.5-hour class do not teach the same amount, and a listing that is cheaper per head may also be shorter. Divide the price by the minutes if you like, but do not let that arithmetic decide it alone. Instructor attention, the room and your own date flexibility matter at least as much.

A craft afternoon in Gion

Stringing two workshops into one outing

  4. Craft stop two

Both bookings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can plan with a margin.

Which session for which kind of traveler

If you want the best-proven option, take the most-rated Gion class. It combines the largest rating count with a group of up to 10 and a starting price of $18. If it is booked on your date, the pottery-class sibling in the same building starts from $9. These two are the natural first pair to check.

If you want a bigger room and do not mind a longer table, the annex sessions offer a cap of 16 and starting prices of $18 and $16. If you want to pay on GetYourGuide's terms, its Gion listing gives you an option to reserve now and pay later, a feature the Viator listings in this set do not state.

If you are based in Arashiyama, the Saga class is the practical choice: 1 hour, up to 20, from $10. If you would rather make something to wear, the jewelry class is the one to book, at $105 for 2.5 hours. Each of these answers a different question, which is why a single winner would be dishonest.

Checklist

How to compare two listings in five minutes

Examine the details3

  • Compare rating counts, not only the averages
  • Note the length and the group cap
  • Treat every price as a from price

Read the place2

  • Check which station is closest to the meeting point
  • Confirm the floor number in your booking email

At the checkout2

  • Check the 24-hour cancellation line
  • Ask the studio what the listing does not say

Booking rules that apply to every session

All of these sessions can be cancelled for a full refund when you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. That makes it low-risk to hold two dates while you finalize your itinerary, then cancel the one you do not need. Set a calendar reminder for the day before.

The price column shows starting prices for one person, copied from the listings; they are not quotes, and your date can cost more. The calculator below takes the lowest price on each listing, times the party you enter, and shows it in your currency at the ECB rate; the final sum appears only at checkout.

One honest limit: we compare what the records say. They list few inclusions, so we cannot tell you how pure the gold powder is, whether every session lets you take the piece home, or how fast the lacquer sets. Message the studio before you book if any of that decides it for you. The craft itself is the same family of skills in every room.
